The night guard of the municipality leisurely roams the streets and at times utters a lengthy chant, almost resounding: “The clock has struck eight”. His attire is a well-worn lambskin cap, a typically robe-like, crude leather cloak and iron-enforced boots. His tools are a track watchman’s lantern and a hatchet. His payment is a bread per house, some grain and a few forints, but in the cities he is paid in full.’ Men with large families, are unfit for heavy phisical work, more mature and aging became track watchmen who had to be not only honest but vigilant too. The track-watchman profession spread in the Hungarian language area set on the example of the organized public security of the western medieval cities and its night-time guard. The last track-watchmen performed served until the 1930s.
